Abstracts The incidence of ischaemic heart disease, hypertensive disease, cerebrovascular disease, other diseases of circulatory system and nephritis was studied in a population living in an area close to a lead smeltery and in a control area over a period of eight years. Data were taken from the records of hospital treatment and of causes of death. Examination included 90 married couples with the husband working in the lead smeltery and 73 couples with the husband not employed in the smeltery. A group of 88 married couples from a control area was also examined. Although the results gained by different methodological approaches were not entirely consistent, comparative analysis indicates that ischaemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and nephritis occur more often in the population from the smelting area than in the control population.
