Sažetak

The quality of the teaching process in visual arts largely depends on creative and effective combination of both general as well as subject-specific (visual arts) teaching methods. The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which class teachers in visual arts teaching use various teaching methods; we also wanted to determine the teachers’ perception of the features, specifics, goal and objectives of their use. Preliminary research has been conducted on a sample of 109 class teachers from Primorje-Gorski Kotar and Istria County. T-test showed a statistically significant difference between the use of teaching methods and qualifications of teachers in only one of the 14 variables. Statistically significant differences between the use of teaching methods and the professional status of teachers were found at 8 of the 14 variables. Results indicate that the use of general, well-established teaching methods in relation to the specific methods is still prevalent in school practice. The purpose of this study was to contribute to the issue of general and specific teaching methods in visual arts teaching. Findings have implications for modernizing and improving school practice; they also suggest further research on this, still inadequately explored area.
