COMPARISON OF AGRITOURISM IN SPLIT-DALMATIA COUNTY AND IN BAVARIA

Agritourism as one of the specific forms within rural tourism is increasingly gaining in importance in the world, positively matching its offer to the modern men's need to escape from urban areas to the regenerating peace and tranquility of rural areas. So this work paper has Split – Dalmatia County in focus and we wanted to examine to what extent agritourism really developed in this area. Since the initial assumption was that agritourism in this County was not sufficiently developed but there was a potential, an area of the federal state of Bavaria in Germany was taken for comparison as an example of successful agritourist destination from which Split - Dalmatia County can learn.The research confirmed initial assumptions and showed that besides the existing natural, cultural and historical potential Split – Dalmatia Country still needed significant development in terms of agritourism in order to reach the status of true and serious agritourist destination. Comparing the current situation in agritourism with that Bavaria it is clear that this destination is merely at the beginning of the real agritourism development and that is yet to decide for it and in that sense confirm the decision by strengthening organizational structures that will provide support and regulate that development. Having summarised a great number of agritourism definitions along with previous studies and reflections on this matter, a succinct definition of agritourism has been designed: "Agritourism is a special type of tourism in either passive or active farm whose visitors enjoy both natural and cultural attractions of the farm holding, consume and/or purchase agricultural products and, according to their wishes, partake in agricultural work thus experiencing the authenticity of bygone rural idyll."
