Sažetak

Principals’ attitudes toward (self)evaluation in early childhood education institutions have a significant impact on successfully implementing the (self)evaluation process and utilizing its results to plan the development of quality. The aim of this study was to examine and analyse principals’ attitudes toward the (self)evaluation of work performance in early childhood education institutions and the relation between the characteristics of these institutions, principals’ socio-demographic characteristics,and their attitudes toward (self)evaluation. This study included 62 kindergarten principals from across Croatia, or 9.2% of the total number of early childhood
education institution principals in the Republic of Croatia. All of the participants were women, average age M=48.17 years (SD=7.8), ranging from 32 to 64.A questionnaire with 31 statements was created for the purpose of this study. As expected, the principals expressed positive general attitudes toward (self)evaluation. A positive correlation was found between the principals’ professional qualifications and their attitudes toward (self)evaluation, i.e. the principals with higher professional qualifications tended to express a more positive attitude toward (self)evaluation. These results indicate the significance of studying the attitudes toward quality and (self)evaluation and confirm the important role of principals in insuring and improving kindergarten quality.
