THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PIGLET MORTALITY FOR FITNESS OF SOWS

Data about the swine enterprises which achieved around 9.5 piglets per litter born alive in a year have been compiled from the annuals of the Livestock Breeding Centre of Croatia published from 1971 till 1990. Mortality of piglets during the suckling period varied from 6.89 till 25.00 per cent. There were five groups of enterprises different by the piglet mortality: 6.89 - 9.69, 10.78 - 13.48, 14.42 - 17.24, 17.76 – 21.00 and 21 .96 - 25.00 per cent. The numbers of piglets weaned per sow per annum have been calculated for the groups of enterprises and it has been investigated the tiends of the fittness of sows related to the number of litters per sow per annum in a group of enterprises. lt has been established that at the prolificacy expressed as 9.5 piglets born alive and with 2.3 litters per sow per annum 22 or more weaned piglets could be achieved if the piglets morlality was under the average (15.72 per cent). lt has been concluded that the piglet mortality was very important for the fittness of sows.
