Sažetak

The attempts of producing shellfish on numerous locations along the coast have proved that there are potentials for shellfish production in Croatia. Out all the mentioned locations only two have realized constant production, the area of Lim channel and the Bay of Mali Ston. These locations are the basis for the future shellfish production development in Croatia. To the se locations ass the future potential basis for development of mariculture and shellfish production it is necessary to add the area the Novigrad sea were there are etremly rich natural shellfish beds which not been evaluated economical so far and to problems in organization. The totlt shellfish production in the analysed period shows the growing tendency, greatly influenced by the mussel production growth (5,19 % average annual rate of growth). The total shellfish production per capita also shows the growing tendency, greatly influenced by the growth of mussel production per capita (5.33 % average annual rate of growth. Mussel and oyster production per capita in relation to the greatest world producers is far be kind but in relation to the neghbours, the possible competitors on the Euroean market, we are quite close. Croatia has realized positive balance of trade with foreign countries and commercial export surplus in mussel and oyster in the whole analysed period. Mussel export realized the growing tendency at the average annual changing rate of growing tendency at the average annual changing rate of growth of 67%. The oyster export (in the last 8 year has had a similar tendency of growth bat at considerably lower average annual rate of change (5,4 %). The main country that imports shellfish from Croatia is ltaly (95 % out of total Croatian export) and the rest is exported to the countries of central Europe (Germany, Austria ). The greatest exporter, that has realized 92% of the total mussel export in the last 5 years, is SAPONIA PJ'Dalmacijabilje' from Dubrovnik. Shellfisth is supplied from two sources, the state owned companies and privately owned companies. On Croatian undeveloped market it is most frequently sold retail on markets. Fish markets, self- service stores and shops, though, prefer frozen shellfish. Most of the fish consumption is taken by the mussel consumption (65-88%) which realizes the growth at the average annual rate of 10.1%. Oyster consumption per capita has the falling tendency at the average annual rate of change - 1,22%. The total shellfish consumption is greatly influenced by the state owned companies in the middle of the summer season (67 % of fresh and 81 % of processed mussels) and the same is the situation of the sale of private producers. In the end we can make a general conclusion. With respect to the existing production capacites and still undeveloped market the future shellfish production development has to be based on the analysis of the needs of the local market, on greater and more stable connection with commercial and tourist companies, on organized market presentation and on foreign markets. lt is also necessary to keep the stable export growth and try to increase the export of shellfish.
