Sažetak

The river Sava became a trade route at the time of mercantilism, i.e. in 1780., when goods (mostly grain, wood and salt) were transported from the area around the Tisa, Hungarian part of the Danube through Slavonia to the Adriatic. Inland navigation downstream the Sava river had some advantages due to poor ebb, but the route was prolonged with numerous meanders (especially from Samac to Zupanja, and from Rajevo Selo to Raca). That is when the attempts of regulation and regional measuring, and the study of the canal Sava-Danube began due to the low, but also high water level of the river Sava. However, money shortage and political reasons hindered the canal construction, but not the regulation of the river Sava bed. Since the second half of the 19th century steam-ship navigation on the Sava was intensified, and especially 1878. when the status of the Sava as the conterminous river was abolished, and thus the objective obstructions for the regulation of the river Sava navigability were eliminated. Demilitarization of Military frontier in 1881. had a great significance for navigability and regulation of the river, when social and economic re-
lations change greatly from Jasenovac to Zemun and Petrovaradin. Navigation down the river Sava depended on the water level changes, which were different at certain places or sections. The floods were frequent, so many active and passive measures of protection were performed in the second part of 19th ct. and the beginning of 20th ct. Passive protection was performed by enlargement of permeable capability of the bed through water stream regulation, construction of the new and reconstruction of the old protective embankments. Protective works consisted of the reconstruction of protective embankments by which the area from Brod, Samac, Rajevo Selo, Raca to Mitrovica was protected from extreme water level of the river Sava and its affluents. More extensive works concerning the regulation of the river Sava from Samac to Rajevo Selo began in autumn 1886., and were supported by "high regal order of Franjo Josip I." from 2nd July 1886. and "imperial and royal Majesty" from 8th June 1871. concerning the abolition of military-governing system in Croato-Slavonian military frontier, and went on in the beginning of 20th century.
