Sažetak

The author researched the running of the primary school in Velika Kopanica since its foundation in 1764 until today. This paper is structured into three distinct periods. The first period shows the running of the trivial school from its founding to 1871, as well as the national elementary school between 1831 and 1871. The second period begins with the introduction of compulsory education in 1871 as well as the creation of a unitary four-year general education public school and lasts until 1950/51. The change from a four-year general education public school into a unitary eight-year compulsory school is the subject of the third period. Methodologically speaking, all three periods are structurally identical: school systems and external organization, school buildings and staff, educational achievements and the specifics of this school. The functioning of the school, its range and limitations can be more objectively seen in the stated general and specific circumstances. This paper uses relevant literature and archival material from: the school, the district, the township, the Historical archive of the City of Slavonski Brod and the Croatian State Archive.
