Dr. Peter Salcher (Kreuzen, Austria, 1848 - Sušak, 1928), Rijeka's Marine-Akademie long time oprofessor of physics and mechanics (1875-1909), became famous for the photographs of bullets shot at supersonic speed. Togather with Sandor Riegler, who taught at the Hungarian Grammar School in Rijeka, he succeeded in taking these pictures and thus providing experimental proof of Ernst Mach's theory about shock wave at supersonic motion - a proof Mach himselve did not manage to provide. To them, much more important than the bullet ltselve was the visualization of the side effects, i.e. of air currents and especially of shock wave. By the end of the 80's Salcher gave up shooting dynamic phenomena in gases at supersonic speed and started showing interest in amateur and art photography. At the turn of the century he photographed a number of scenes of the open see in the Kvarner Bay area and of Rijeka port, experimenting with light effects in variety of weather conditions and at different times of the day. In the spirit of Impresionism, he showed great interest in reflections in water and wrote a handbook for drawers, painters and photographers, Die Wasser-Spiegelbilder (Halle a.S. 1903), where he started his aestetic wievs and pointed out of the reflected image on agitated and rough see, a magic mirror. He thus anticipated the transformation of the realistic painting into the new, avant-garde painting, fragmented of diffuse. By means of physical discourse, Salcher aimed for a Synthesis of science (physics), technology (photography) and art - which was accepted, re-aimed and developed by the 20th c.
