Sažetak
An important chapter in European art after World
War II was the Enformel, with the linguistic variants
L’informel in French, Informalismo in Spanish, L’informale
in Italian, and Informell in German, an art movement
that was chronologically and intellectually related to
the contemporaneous philosophy and literature of
existentialism. Among the Croatian artists, the Enformel
found numerous followers and the exhibition Informel
1956-1962 introduced the radical wing, consisting of
Ivo Gattin, Eugen Feller, Vlado Kristl, Marijan Jevšovar,
and Đuro Seder. These artists found a theoretical
platform in an influential text titled “Materia, tecnica
e storia nell’informale” (1959) by the Italian art critic
Giulio Carlo Argan, published in Croatian translation as
“Materija, tehnika i povijest u informelu” in Književnik
1 (Zagreb, 1961). Specific and individual versions of
“radical Enformel” found an expression in paintings by
Ivo Gattin exhibited at the ULUH Gallery in Zagreb in
1957, later shown in two of his retrospectives: at Nova
Gallery in 1978 and posthumously at the Museum of
Contemporary Art in 1992. Besides his outstanding
artistic oeuvre, Gattin wrote an important theoretical
text: “Novi material” (“New Material”), published in
Umjetnost 4-5 (Zagreb, 1957). Eugen Feller had a solo
exhibition at Studio G, organized by the Gorgona art
group in 1962, with a series of Enformel paintings called
Malampije, a title borrowed from the prose of Nathalie
Sarraute. The radical Enformel of Gattin and Feller can
be understood as a programmatic chapter in the socalled
“second line” of Croatian art in the period after
World War II, which ranged from Gorgona to the new
art practices in the 1970s.
