Sažetak

The paper presents a history of photographic processes, focusing on the photography on glass. It gives a description of the characteristics of dry gelatin negatives on glass, listing examples of the most common injuries and degradations arising from inappropriate keeping conditions. The safekeeping of analogue photographs entails a precise identification of the material, to be followed by its systematization and protection. In ensuring the prescribed conditions that primarily entail the proper protective packaging, air temperature and relative humidity, the conditions are generated for the stability of photographic materials, and thereby for the durability of the collection. An important step in running a photograph collection is the process of digitalization, whereby easily and quickly accessible, high-quality versions of analogue photographs are obtained, while at the same time, the need to handle the original is reduced to a minimum. The paper describes the process of digitalization of a collection of dry gelatin glass negatives kept by the Croatian Conservation Institute.
