Sažetak

Šulek’s vocal cycles Pjesma mrtvog pjesnika [Song of a dead poet] and Strah [Fear] lie in the shadow of his instrumental and stage pieces and did not attract attention, even in musicology. The first cycle was composed on the lyrics of Dobriša Cesarić in 1969/1970, and the second on the lyrics of Đuro Sudeta in Autumn of 1973. They are kept in the Stjepan Šulek collection in the Hrvatski glazbeni zavod [Croatian Music Institute] in Zagreb. The first cycle, titled after the last of the series of 12 songs, is framed by two extensive solo-songs: Povratak [Return] and Pjesma mrtvog pjesnika [Song of a dead poet]. Within this frame, short vocal miniatures are ordered following the principle of contrast in both the character of their verses and music, sometimes only functioning as a link between two songs. The cycle Fear, consisting of seven songs, is marked mostly by melancholic and anguished moods that by the end of the cycle become tragic. The composer set Sudeta’s poems to music using typewriter transcriptions of the words evidently led by their dramaturgy and the accumulation of tension leading towards the dramatic climax, with Fear being the last song of the cycle. In both cycles the composer realises the same dramatic sensibility that he masterfully showed in his larger works for the musical stage, using all the means of his musical expressiveness in affective interpretation of the lyrics. The semantic interpretation of the text is related to the autonomous musical aspect.
