Sažetak

Regarding the significance of alginates in the prevention of internal radiostrontium contamination it was considered useful to study the effect of some alginates isolated from the algae growing in the Adriatic sea on strontium transport through duodenal wall of the rat. The effect of our alginates was compared to that of sodium alginate known under the name of 0. G. I which proved most efficient in the selective reduction of radiostrontium absorption. The results show that the alginates isolated from four species of algae in the Adriatic (out of the five species studied) reduce strontium transport equally efficiently as 0. G. I. As a rule, domestic alginates also lowered duodenal calcium absorption the more so the stronger was their effect on strontium. The effect on calcium, however, was always weaker than on strontium.
