Sažetak

Introduction and Objective: Nourishment status is one of the most important factors of health and physical capabilities of individuals and groups. It influences psychophysical capabilities and potential of person to have healthy growth and development. The aim of the study was to estimate nourishment status among adolescents from the area of Central Bosnia Canton.
Subjects and Methods: The study encompassed 752 pupils from 23 high schools from the area of Central Bosnia Canton. Data were collected by anonymous questionnaire which included general data, dietary habits and lifestyle questions. Anthropometric parameters were determined by measurements. Nourishment status was estimated and expressed according to standard BMI cut-offs and percentile curves.
Results: Obtained data showed deviation in nourishment status categorisation of the girls and boys expressed according to the standard BMI cut-offs in comparison to the percentile curves. Greater portion of obese (9.4% in comparison to 0.9%) and underweight (13.0% in comparison to 1.2%) was noticed according to the percentile curves in comparison to the BMI, while percentile curves marked higher percentage of overweight than BMI (13.9% in comparison to 0%).
Conclusion: Given that among adolescents body image is one of the biggest concerns using the inappropriate tools could have significant negative impact. Therefore it is important to stress out, among the general adolescent population, the fact that body mass index cut-offs are not appropriate for minors. Instead, percentile curves should be used.
