Abstracts
Genetic programs in cattle have been very successful in improving the productivity of dairy cattle over the last 50 years. Genomic selection is a new tool to help the cattle industry in order to obtain reliable breeding values of young individuals (particularly bulls). Genomic breeding value can be calculated for both sexes early in life, and thus the genomic selection can increase profitability and accelerate genetic improving in dairy cattle by reducing the generation interval and bulls costs. The highest accuracy of genomic evaluation was accomplished in Holstein cattle, although the good results achieved with breeds Jersey and brown cattle. Today, breeders use genomic selection as a preliminary selection of young bulls. As a very positive side selection highlights the fact that reducing the number of young bulls reduces the cost of breeding. In addition, genomic selection allows better control of origin and prevention of inbreeding and improving traits with low heritability
