EXHIBITION AND CATALOGUE “THEATRICAL HISTORICAL SCENES” IN THE MARITIME AND HISTORICAL MUSEUM OF THE HRVATSKO PRIMORJE REGION

Sažetak
From May 17 to February 18, 2014, in the Maritime and Historical Museum of the Hrvatsko primorje Region put on the exhibition TheatRical Historical Scenes, which gave a review of the development of theatrical life in the city of Rijeka from the time
of ancient Tarsatica to the 20th century. But since the history of the Rijeka theatre did not begin in the building that today bears
the name of the great figure of Croatian music Ivan pl. Zajc, the exhibition went back to the distant past in an attempt to reveal
the impossible. The charm of the theatre inheres in its mysteriousness and the unexpected, surprising energy that compels
genuine emotions and forever links those on both sides of the stage to those boards that someone once said mean life. The
exhibition tells of the history and architecture of the theatre, of Croatian and Rijekan theatrical beginnings, and also of the pearl
of architecture that was given to Rijeka by two exceptional architects who specialised in the building of theatres all around the
Austro-Hungarian Empire. The exhibition and the catalogue in two different ways presented the history of the theatre. While
the exhibition was bound to the theatrical past of Rijeka, the catalogue is a wider review of the development of the stage from
magical rituals to the contemporary theatre, the architecture of theatres and the history of theatrical life in Croatia, with a
special emphasis on the chronological depiction of the development of the theatre in Rijeka. At the heart of the exhibition were
the celebrated Rijeka people Andrija Ljudevit Adamić and Ivan Zajc, who, each in his own time and in his own way, set a stamp
on the theatrical life of Rijeka. Another crucial feature was the cult performance Exercising Life by Nedjeljko Fabrio, Darko
Gašparović and Georgij Paro, which Rijeka people recognised as the strongest link between city and theatre in the long history
of the Rijeka stage.
Accompanying the exhibition, a catalogue was printed, capable of standing alone, a meticulous detailing of the development the
theatre, theatre architecture and the Croatian and Rijeka stags. Denis Nepokoj devised the exhibition and wrote the catalogue.
