Sažetak

Modern society is influenced by globalization, democratization and a strong technology development. The demands for the teaching profession are changing as well, and a provision of new competencies of teachers that are in correspondence with the students' competence is necessary. A qualified and competent teacher, as well as all other holders of the educational process, should be trained for teaching methodology, which is awarded upon university completion and through lifelong learning. Working in a classroom requires maximal interaction; communication in the form of a dialogue, working together with students. Teachers cannot simply rely on their knowledge, the way they carry themselves is also important, as well as possessing skills for acquiring and maintaining interpersonal relationships in the classroom. A contemporary school requires pedagogically competent teachers who can meet the demands of a modern society. Strategic policies are not sufficient for a quality development of the teaching profession, therefore, a greater connection between the theory and practice is proposed, that is, a more controlled inclusion of contemporary strategic documents and permanent lifelong learning in the form of function and importance of contemporary changes in accordance with the needs of contemporary students. Striving towards something better and in accordance with the needs of new students is extremely important, therefore faster changes and flexibility in the educational system, more choices and the development of modern competencies based on curricular settings are needed. Without a competent teacher, and a teacher with an awakened desire and need for lifelong learning, there will be no competent students, there will be no students who will learn how to use sources of knowledge to be able to continue learning after school, i.e. to get involved in the process of lifelong learning.
