Abstract

Historical science has not reached a final response on whether the ancient Roman city of Tarsatica, situated where today the city of Rijeka is, was the seat of a bishop. From the 16th century there are tendencies that lead toward establishment of an independent diocese in Rijeka. The modern times witnessed several attempts in that sense, especially after the Congress in Vienna. However, Rijeka became a diocese only during the Italian administration, between the two World wars. Pope Pio XI establishes a diocese centered in Rijeka, whose faithful were of three nationalities: Croats, Slovenians and Italians. After the 2nd World War, the diocese is divided in two parts: a Croatian and a Slovenian. It was only in 1969 that pope Paul VI solved the question of diocesan boundaries of Rijeka, by establishing an archdiocese and metropoly in Rijeka.
