FOLK AND POPULAR LITERATURE: ONE AND THE SAME?

Sažetak
The difference between the terms folk and popular literature is explained through the use of a lyrical text, the song Ajde, Kato, ajde, zlato. By analyzing the verses of the song and other verses that were determined to be superfluous, the author establishes that text is susceptible to change within folk literature, as it lacks established authorship. The opposite holds for popular literature, where the text is immutable as it is subject to authorship rights and other conventions within this sphere that govern production and distribution. Thus we could say that folk literature exists in a legally unregulated, and popular literature on a legally regulated, art market. They also differ in their purpose: folk literature is aimed at the common folk, while popular literature is aimed at everyone. The reason for this are largely historical, and folk and popular literature actually belong to two different epochs. When folk literature began disappearing amid societal shifts, the rise of popular literature can be observed. Folk literature was at its peak in the times when there was a vast gap between the common folk and the upper classes, in both a monetary and educational sense. Common folk no longer exist in the traditional context of the term, thus there are no works of art being made exclusively for them, and various forms of popular art are growing increasingly prevalent.
The answer to the question of whether folk and popular literature are one and the same must therefore be: one followed by the other.
