Sažetak

The paper analyses global use of information-communication technology based on data provided by the International Telecommunication Union; in Croatia data are obtained from field research carried out by the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb on a representative sample of adult population of Croatia. In telephones, mobile phones and the Internet Croatia equals the European average, while it falls behind in the number of computers per one hundred inhabitants. In Croatia, digital inequality is best predicted by both education and income of a household, that is, personal income of examinees. The Internet users are better educated and have a higher income than those who never use it. Statistically relevant differences relate to age and place of living, minor differences to gender. The Internet users are young people mostly living in towns, there are slightly more men than women among them. The Internet is mostly used in families with three or four members. Already existing social inequality correlates with digital inequality. Therefore the digital gap, an essential form of information era inequality (Castells), can be bridged only by decreasing social inequality.
