Efficacy of low energy diet in the treatment of psoriasis

Sažetak

The aim of the present study was to determine whether some types of nutrition act as outer aggravating factors in the treatment of Psoriasis vulgaris. The investigation, carried out in Osijek Clinical Hospital, at the Department of Dermatovenerology, as well as at the Nutrition Department, included 52 patients aged 40-56, who had at least a 10-year history of the slain disorders. 26 cases (14 men and 12 women), in addition to usual topical therapy, received dietary treatment for 14 days. The diet had reduced levels of fat (X =14.7 g/day) and proteins, especially those of animal origin (X =10.6 g/day) which also resulted in lower daily energy intake (X=855 kcal). The controls received only topical therapy with no changes to the diet. Results (triglycerides, cholesterol, HDL and LDL) showed a significant improvement of skin lesions in the patients on diet with regard to of lowered triglycerides, cholesterol and LDL in serum. In controls, there were no significant changes of thase parameters and the regression of skin lesions was slower.
