Population dynamics of insect pests on cereals in north west Croatia in 2016

Sažetak

Monitoring the pest population dynamics together with having appropriate information on the threshold levels is necessary for proper decision on pest control. The pest intensity on certain species of cereal crops is influenced by the climatic conditions, and by the preference of the individual pest species to the host. It is proved that cereal leaf beetles prefer oats among all other cereal species. But, there is no data about the preference of other pests and also it is not known what can influence the preference. The aim of this study was to determine the height and dynamic of the population of pests on four species of cereal crops at the experimental farm Šašinovački Lug in 2016 and, to establish differences in pest attack on individual host species under the conditions of implemented plant protection measures. Four cereal species (wheat, oat, barley and triticale) were surveyed. The presence of wheat and grain trips (Haplothrips tritici Kurd., 1931 and Limnothrips cerealium Halid. 1836), cereal bugs (genus Eurygaster and Aelia), aphids, flea beetles (P. vittula i C. aridula), cereal leaf beetles (Oulema melanopus and Lema lichenis) and saddle gall midge (Haplodiplosis marginata) has been established. The trips presence was established in the highest population on barley and triticale. The strongest attack of cereal leaf beetles was established on oat while flea beetles were the most numerous on triticale. Insecticide application was not always conditioned by the intensity of the pest attack. Cereal leaf beetle attack was at economic threshold level and the application of insecticides was fully justified. However, the combination of the two insecticides, used in the full doses both, was not necessary and was against the principles of integrated pest management. The population of flea beetles in oat field was very high. However, the recorded damage has been caused much before the insecticide application. Concluding we can state that there are differences in cereal pest species regarding their preference to host plant. The same time it also confirmed that pest forecasting should be the basis for determining the need for insecticide application.
