Sažetak

In this abstract we gave an exposition of the organisation and work of the Service for blood transfusion in peace and wartime. As the application of blood and blood preparations is an important part of specialists treatment of the wounded, we did everything needed to applicate it in proper time and in appropriate quantities. And we did this although we stayed with only half the personnel in the service. In the first months of the war our daily reserves of 400 blood doses were enough because from the middle of September to the end of December 1991 year, an average daily usage was 15,7 blood doses and in first three months of 1992 it was 5,96 blood doses. As the war destroying in our community became more intensive as well as in neighbouring state of Bosnia, it resulted by more intensive accession of the wounded. Therefore we enlarged daily reserves for 25% (500 blood doses). An average daily expediture of blood and blood preparations in the period from April 1st till the end of July was 56,6 blood doses. But there was a day when even 300 doses of blood were used. It shows that the real situation could remarkably diverge from the average. Time distribution of the wounded wasn’t balanced; thus in only one hour 60 wounded were accepted and 20 of them were transfusiologically treated. In spite of war conditions we take and conserve blood, find out blood groups, do immunohematological analyses, and in the department for coagulation, tests for ascertaining hemostasys and observations of curing thrombusembolism are done.
