Sažetak

Transformation of the Osijek civil hospital into a war hospital, with particular reference to the Department of Surgery, is described. The hospital in Osijek was directly attacked on numerous occasions during the large-scale war rampant in north-east Croatia in 1991. A brief account of the historical development of war surgery preceding the present war surgery doctrine, is followed by a comprehensive presentation of organizational interventions required for successful performance of such an institution in war conditions and for high-quality work of specialized surgical teams. The main organizational points of the war surgery in Osijek that have proved successful during the last nine months are presented in the form of the so-called ten organizational commandments. Total mortality of 2.8% per 3206 wounded persons points to high efficiency of such an organization.
