Operative biopsy in benign mammal diseases

Sažetak

The frequency of benign mammal diseases, especially mastopathies has been constantly increasing. The main problem is to differentiate between a benign disease and a precancerous condition or a non-invasive cancer. Radiographic and cytological diagnostic procedures are very important, but the findings of an operative biopsy are of decisive value. Operative biopsy is usually performed extemporarily, i.e. during an operation which attempts to remove all the affected tissue, so that in case of benignity it is also the final surgical procedure. The treated area is approached by a semi-circular cut above the pathologically changed tissue, because such a cut rarely causes skin necrosis and leaves a tender and estetically acceptable scar. Only in case of small-volume gynecomastieas could we recommend a transversal transareolomamillary cut, usually resulting in marginal skin necrosis. In the Medical Centres of Bjelovar and Slavonska Požega, 342 women and 39 man underwent an operative biopsy according to these principles in the last five years.
