Sažetak

During the past, without any scientific explanations,
participation of people with epilepsy in physical activities
was limited, which resulted in their poorer health status
compared to general population.
Various researches have been conducted showing
that regular psychical activity of people with epilepsy has
neuroprotective and antiepileptic effect.
Physical, psychological and psychosocial benefits
of physical activity are beyond every theoretical and
demonstrative risk.
The International League Against Epilepsy issued
a guidelines about participation of people with epilepsy
in sport activities. Regarding to potential risk of injury
and death, sport disciplines are divided into three main
groups considering all important characteristics of epileptic
disorder. The decision of participation in sport discipline
has to be strictly individual. Also there is an attempt to
include epileptics into physical activity given their own
safety and safety of others.
These guidelines are applicable for both, professional
and amateur sports and for all age groups.
Decision about participation in some kind of physical
activity has to be made based on benefits and risks of people
with epilepsy being engaged in physical activity.
Most of sports activities, with few exceptions, are safe
to people with epilepsy participate in. Adequate control
of epileptic seizures, regular use of antiepileptic therapy
are key factors to take into consideration also to point
out potential risks related with physical activity to family
members and trainers of epileptic person.
Family doctors, neurologists and paediatricians have
to encourage physical activity and inform person with
epilepsy, family or their legal guardians about advantages
of being involved in physical activity
