Clement’s Tradition in Macedonian Medieval Literacy (on the occasion of the 1100 th Death Anniversary of Clement of Ohrid)

Sažetak
The topic of the research of this paper are the linguistic features (phonetical and orthographic, morpho-syntactical and lexical) of the Macedonian Church Slavic texts from the period between the 7th and the 15th century which are related to the activity of the Ohrid (Clement’s) Literary School. There are some differential features registered in other Church Slavic redactions as well, but some of them are specific only to Macedonian texts (e.g. vocalization of jers ú > о, ü > å, denasalization © > а, ó, ú etc.). The oldest Ohrid manuscripts preserve lot of archaisms, Grecisms etc., and the relation to the Cyril and Methodius period and the archaic character of the language are reflected in the later Macedonian Cyril literacy. The analysis confirms the development of the phonetic and orthographic system (vocalization of jers, mixing of nasal vowels and denasalization as a reflection of the old dialect differentiation, use of ı, replacement of û and è, limited use of iota vowels, vocal contractions; preservation of the epenthetic л, fastening and changes in consonant clusters); the changes in the noun system which result in considerable simplification of the syntactic declension, proposition and case constructions for expressing the syntactic relations; archaic Glagolitic forms and innovations under the influence of the local languages; the language features related to the compliance of the colloquial speech and the old literary tradition. The lexical system also preserves the archaic lexical layer as part of the Cyril and Methodius heritage, as well as lexical variants which reflect the specific characteristic of the Macedonian redaction; certain word derivation tendencies are reviewed as well.
