Sažetak

Introduction: The modern way of life often leads to various stress conditions expressed in the form of
anxiety, depression, insomnia, tension, aggression etc. Most often, in such situations, medications from
the group of sedatives are used. In addition to sedatives, various pharmaceutical forms of herbal preparations
may also be used. More recently, diets and dietary supplements are recommended.
The aim of the study was to identify the ingredients of foods that have a sedative effect based on available
scientific information and research.
Results and discussion: The food contains several types of peptides, vitamins, amino acids and minerals
that have sedative effects. From the group of amino acids most often used are phenylalanine, tyrosine,
tryptophan. Vitamins with sedative effect are thiamine, cobalamin, nicotinamide B3, and magnesium is
important from group of minerals. In addition, most of these food ingredients can be used in the form of
a dietary supplement. Herbs such as Valeriana officinalis, Melissa officinalis, Passiflor are used as pharmaceutical
preparations. To alleviate the effects of stress, antioxidants are recommended from foods and
supplements, but also increased physical activity as measures to alleviate the effects of stress.
Conclusions: Stress is a trigger for many diseases. Certain sedative effects and reduce the use of drugs
that have a harmful side effects can be achieved by dieting.
