Architectural Interpretation of Patron Saints on Some Examples of 20th-Century Ecclesiastical Architecture in Zagreb

The paper discusses the principal stylistic periods of the 20th century which provide the context for the examination
of selected examples of ecclesiastical architecture and the analysis of the relationship between the architectural
design of a particular church and its patron saint. The subject of patron saint is one of the themes deeply
related to the meaning of ecclesiastical liturgical Christian architecture. It is one of the first themes which the architect should address on the path towards the more complex symbolic levels of his task. Nowadays both architects and the wider public feel that ecclesiastical architecture has reached a crossroads in its search for a new identity and new expression. Already in the first half of the 20th century there were efforts of connecting form and content, also testified by the attitude towards the interpretation of church patron saints in that period, discussed in this paper. In their search for »the truth in architecture« in the spirit of Modernism, the architects of the first half of the 20th century still considered the theme of the patron saint. However, towards the end of the century the symbolic content, central to every ecclesiastical liturgical space, is lost. The theme of architectural interpretation of the patron saint has almost completely vanished, while iconographic representations related to architectural design and referring to the patron saint appear very rarely. Therefore the consideration of this theme as an important element of an architectural programme is one of the first steps in the complex task of designing ecclesiastical architecture.
