Commemorating the 75th Birthday: Life and Activity of Dr. Josip Kolanović, Retired Director of the Croatian State Archives

Dr. Josip Kolanović, historian, archivist and long-time director of the Croatian State Archives (CSA) was born on March 6, 1938 in Zadar. He started working in CSA (then called Archives of Croatia) in 1972 and after twenty years of work in 1991 he was appointed director of CSA, his previous duty being the Head of Archival Division for Ancient Documents (1985-1990). This article presents his life and activity, emphasizing his professional and scientific achievements as historian, archivist and director of CSA. It describes his work on arranging archives and producing finding aids, on tasks concerning publishing, realization of agreement on restitution of archives (from Austria, Italy, as well as Belgrade Archives after the breakup of Yugoslavia). The article also illuminates his work in Commission of Ministry of Culture for Protecting Cultural Heritage during Wartime and also his activities in educating archival employees as associate professor of many courses in archival science and postgraduate studies in information sciences at Zagreb’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The paper also gives a short reference to his endeavors in international archival cooperation, his encouragement of Croatian archivists to use study sojourns in European and other countries, as well as getting to know new tendencies in contemporary archival science and directing the entire Croatian archival administration towards protection and custody of archives as part of national cultural heritage and modern enabling of their use for research purposes. It is noted that the significance of contemporary Croatian archival administration in the area of culture is present due to content and quantity of various records that are kept in professional custody and modernly processed in accordance with laws on records and Archives, in all of which Dr. Kolanovi≥ has great merit. It is underlined that since his retirement ten years ago he has been continuing working in the area of history and archival science. The appendix at the end of the article lists most of his theological, historical and archival written works.
