The Condition of the Records Management Inspection Service in Croatia and its Priorities

Sažetak
The records management inspection service as a constitutive unit within the Archives represents a specific form of cooperation between the Archives and the records creator. The main objectives of the records management inspection service are inspection, registration, appraisal, weeding approval and taking into custody of the archives. The Service assists in the acquisition policy of the Archives and without the adequate records management inspection service it would not be possible to conduct systematic preservation of the archives as a part of the national culturai heritage.
Nowadays we are becoming increasingly aware that the mere inspection of the archives in the making does not suffice; it is necessary to get more actively involved in the entire life cycle of the document. This implies that the archivists should play a constructive role in the creation of the legal acts and professional standards regarding the records conservation.
According to the information about the condition of the records management inspection service in Croatia, gathered by a survey of all the state Archives as well as by monitoring of its work over the period of a number ofyears, it is necessary to take the following steps:
- to increase staff of the records management inspection service
- to work continuously on onežs own education
- to increase the inf1uencc on the active life of the document
- to improve, immediately and without delay, the quality of cooperation with the archival processing departments within the Archives
- to homogenize work of the records management inspection services – to establish standards
- to perform the creators appraisal
- to make the retention schedule (common, branch, specific)
- to improve the quality and intensity of creators education until the final and systematic solution for their training
- to solve the problem of private archives by employing the existing legal acts, which would enhance our abilities for inspection and information gathering about this important part of the archival heritage.
