THE INFLUENCE OF HEAT AND MECHANICAL SCARIFICATION ON SHORTENING SEED DORMANCY OF CHOSEN BARLEY CULTIVARS

Sažetak
This research was conducted to determine the impact of heat treatment and mechanical scarification on seed dormancy of dormant barley cultivars (Bc Vedran i Favorit) grown in two seasons (2015. and 2016.). In the first experiment, the heat treatment of dormant seed was 45°C for 15 minutes and for the 30 minutes. The first determination of germination in these treatments started on the 2nd week after harvest and was then carried out every 7 days for the next 9 weeks. In the second experiment, mechanical scarification of dormant barley seed was done by peeling the glumes away and germination was determined in the 2nd week after harvest. The results of the research showing that both cultivars were dormant for 9 weeks in the first year of the research (2015.), and during the 8 weeks in the second year of the research (2016.). Treatment of dormant barley seed (Bc Vedran and Favorit) with heat did not have any effect on shortening of seed dormancy. Dormancy shortening was achieved with mechanical scarification in both years and both cultivars (2015 and 2016; Bc Vedran 100 %, 2015 and 2016; Favorit 99 %). Germination energy increased after mechanical scarification in both years and both cultivars.
