Smoking as a social problem in the context of Croatian society: attitudes and opinions of adults and high school students

Sažetak

The structure of this paper is as follows: the first part is the introduction which contains an insight into former relevant researches about smoking; the second brings remarks about methodology; the third presents the attitudes and opinions of adults and high-school students on the problem of smoking; the fourth part brings the discussion and the fifth is the conclusion. The subject of the Research is to see what kind of opinions and attitudes about the problem of smoking exists among adults and high-school students in different parts of Croatia. The main aim of the research is to determine to what extent smoking is spread among adults and youngsters, and special aims are to investigate the main causes of starting smoking, the age when they started smoking and manners of behavior related to smoking. The main hypothesis is that the answers considering the problems of smoking will significantly differ between the adult and young respondents. Adults in majority reject disappointment being the main cause of starting smoking; they most often started to smoke in high-school. Cigarette does not serve them as a means of proving themselves in life. They believe that smokers are mainly arrogant towards non-smokers and impertinent when non-smokers warn them that they endanger their health. They believe that educative example of parents is of great importance in preventing the youngsters to start smoking. The majority of smokers are aware that cigarette shortens the life. Women smokers are double fewer than men smokers. The inhabitants of big towns more often mention disappointment as the cause of smoking. Unlike the inhabitants of the town of Biograd, the respondents from Zagreb and Split think that great majority of smokers are impertinent toward non smokers, and they more often respond that smokers behave ruthlessly. The inhabitants of Zagreb and Split in greater number consider that good educative example of parents is of great importance to prevent youngsters from starting smoking. Differences related to the place of living are present among the answers considering the awareness that cigarette shortens the life. The inhabitants of Biograd are most aware of that danger and after them follow the inhabitants of Split and Zagreb. High-school students start smoking at the age of 15, even of 12. For great majority of them cigarette is not a means of proving themselves in life; disappointment is not the reason to start smoking; majority consider that good upbringing in the family is crucial to prevent youngsters from smoking; great majority is aware of dangerous consequences for life because of smoking; they think that smokers behave arrogantly toward non-smokers; they believe that their influence on the peers to stop smoking is insignificant, but girls in considerably greater number think that they can influence their peers.
