Sažetak

The paper gives a review of the possibilities of
cytodiagnostic and tumor markers in the early detection and
diagnostics of malignant diseases, especially in children and
prognostic importance in therapeutic follow-up of the patients.
An analysis is made of cytodiagnostic methods and modern use
of new technical possibilities in cytological smears. In malignant
tumour diagnostics, among other diagnostic procedures,
determination of tumour markers in the serum has a significant
role. Tumour markers are substances whose presence, increased
concentrations, or activity indicates with great probability
the presence of a malignant tumour. Tumour markers can be
divided in the following manner: antigens, hormones, proteins
and enzymes. For many years research efforts have been
focused on finding the so called “ideal” tumour marker of a
high diagnostic sensitivity and distinctiveness.
