HOW DO PRESCHOOL CHILDREN SEE ‘BIG BROTHER’ SHOW?

The aim of the research was examining some characteristics of pre-school age children, who are Big Brother show viewers: examining reasons why children watch this show, from the aspects of preferred contents and persons (candidates), participants in show.
Occasional sample of children, middle and older kindergarten children’s groups, from 3 kindergartens from Zagreb (Kindergarten “Grigor Vitez”, Kindergarten «Maksimir» and Kindergarten «Trnoružica», N = 142) was examined. Frequencies for reasons why some participants in show were more preferred by children and frequencies for specific contents in show were found. Following results, about two thirds examined children usually watch «Big Brother» show. Girls something more often watch this show (comparing to boys), and children who’s mothers have something lower level of the education. From the educational aspect, data about parental often surveillance about children’s viewing show (which could be potentially noxious for children) is very encouraging. Inspecting ranks and arithmetical means for examined characteristics, it’s found that reasons for children’s preference/non-preference some candidates or show in general, are individually very different. Many statistical significant correlations between variables that describe reasons for children’s preference/non-preference some candidates or show in general, were found. Children’s preferences for some candidates are very different and those preferences are probably leaded with completely different criteria, comparing with adult’s preferences. Thus, it very probable (preferences are based mostly on the physical look) that in pre-school age, watching show don’t have specific non-desirable consequences for children.
