Social Marginalization of Science and Trends in Croatian Research Personnel

Sažetak

A comprehensive insight into the trends of growth, volume
and structure of Croatian research personnel is of the
utmost importance in examining human resources in
scientific and technological development. Such insight,
which is the aim of this paper, has been achieved by
applying complex analysis and synthesis of various
available empirical information: either statistical data on
researchers or findings of international and Croatian
studies about science. The decrease of total and research
personnel in Croatian R&D in the last decade followed the
general trends typical for post-socialist countries. Due to a
long history of social marginalization of science, consequences
of such trends have been particularly severe for
the Croatian innovative potential. Therefore considering the
relative strength of its research force, Croatia today lags
behind developed countries and is even behind the average
for transitional countries. The socio-demographic
composition of research personnel clearly suggests that its
regenerative power and creative vitality might be at risk,
which refers primarily to the age structure of scientific
personnel. Additionally, the recent mass entrance of young
women in R&D, though socially desirable, is also an
indicator of the unfavourable social and economic position
of science.
