Sažetak
The author is concerned with elucidating a highly specific feature of the Croatian post-war novel manifested as slackening of its »epic« texture due to the introduction of various non-narrative elements, primarily
essayistic digressions. The novels of Petar Segedin, Vladan Desnica,
Ranko Marinkovic, Slobodan Novak, Jozo Lausic and others share the same basic intention: conveyance of experience that can no longer be narrated. Rather than the event itself, it is the spirit of the event that counts in these novels, the trials and ordeals of the mind, the magic of contemplation, the endless probing of one’s reflective potentials. The acting hero of the novel has become a contemplating »hero« and the literary work itself, only a record of his thoughts, a report on the seething of his soul, a reflection of his intellectual curiosity.
Essayism .forms the intellectual framework of the novel, masking the author’s ideas, convictions and doctrines. It has furthermore become
an indispensable component of the contents when the spiritual background is so complex as to require additional explanation and exposition (as for instance in The Cyclops by R. Marinkovic, Banners by M. Krleza, The Springtimes of Ivan Galeb by V. Desnica, etc.). The narrative structure has been broken down to incorporate numerous analytical interpolations and reflective explications. This has of course brought about substantial changes in the structure of narrative fiction, resulting in an entirely new narrative strategy in which the novelistic texture is subordinated to intellectual reflection.
