CHARACTERISTICS OF FAMILY MEDIATION

Sažetak
The aim of this paper is to expand thecognizance of family mediation, and to evaluate new aspects of this specific professional skill in the sphere of the occupations that provide assistance. First the explanations of notions are given – mediation and reconciliation in relation to the legal determinations i.e. the theory of conflict. Basic provisions and manners of classification of mediation, as an approach to the resolution of conflict with the assistance of the third party, are presented. Special attention was given to the advantages of family mediation in the resolution of family conflicts, and the most common contents of the family mediation and mediation on the occasion of divorce are given. The paper describes a four-stages model of family mediation that consists of the introduction, narrative, problem resolution and agreement. The paper briefly presents the areas of application, theoretical starting points and practical models of family mediation. The final part of the paper discusses some problems of the family mediation in Croatia – narrowness of the area of mediation to the mediation on the occasion of divorce, lack of adjustment of the contents and aims of the mediation with the valid principles of family mediation and family mediation models, emphasising the preventive possibilities of family mediation with the aim to achieve better family relations.
