Experimental production of iron ore melting furnaces – processes, problems, solutions

Sažetak
Research of iron ore melting has been conducted in the area of Podravina since 2008, which in 2017 resulted in development of the project of the Croatian association for science, TransFER, focused on research of iron production along the Drava river in the antique period and in the Middle Ages. Introductory part of the paper briefly presents current cognition regarding the area of research, whereas the central part, based on conducted experimental research, outlines the overall process of constructing the ore melting furnace, starting with collection of the basic raw material to erecting the furnace, its drying, warming up and the administration of the melting process. Along with description of the process and analysis of the problem that craftsmen were confronted with during production procedure, the paper also presents results and experience gained within two experimental melting procedures.
