Cognitive behavioral therapy for functional vestibular disorders

Sažetak

Functional dizziness is the second most common vestibular disorder in adult population that significantly interferes with everyday functioning. Through history, the concept of functional dizziness represented several clinical entities. The consensus document of the Committee for the Classification of Vestibular Disorders of the Bárány Society included in the forthcoming 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-introduces the term of persistent postural-perceptive dizziness as the most common functional neuro-vestibular disorder. Studies suggest that the cause of functional dizziness lies in neuroanatomical and functional connections of the brain regions responsible for controlling movement and body position and those responsible for perception of danger and fear. A sense of postural instability is frequently followed by insecurity, low self- confidence and anxious- depressive symptomatology. The aim of this review is to discuss psychological factors and therapeutic interventions affecting recovery from functional vestibular disorders with special emphasis on the elaboration of the cognitive behavioral model and therapy of persistent postural-perceptive dizziness.
