Porin’s Ending

Sažetak

The author examines Lovro Županović’s interpretation of Vatroslav Lisinski’s opera Porin (1848-51), articulated in the monograph of the composer published in 1969, an interpretation now considered a »standard«. Although Županović finds some successful sides of that work, especially its musical dimension, he essentially considers it a failure, so in the end he can only imagine it in a concert hall, as a kind of oratorio. Analysing Županović’s argument and the appropriate parts of the opera itself, especially its ending, the author shows that Županović’s interpretation points on the one hand to his unfulfilled expectations, as a result of which he considers the work not to be »ideologically correct«, in the sense that it is not »national« enough, and on the other to his inability to imagine the aesthetic context in which the work as it is would prove to be meaningful and justified.
