OLDER LAYER OF A MURAL IN SAINT BRCKO'S PARISH CHURCH ON KALNIK – NEW DISCOVERIES AND NEW KNOWLEDGES (FASHION AND COUTURE AS AUXILIARY MATERIAL FOR DATATION OF FRESCOES)

A few years ago, the remains of medieval frescoes were discovered on the south wall of the nave of the parish church of St. Brcko in Kalnik. Although the remains are defective, one scene differs in them, which in terms of content fits into the framework of the remains previously discovered on the north wall of the nave. Earlier, I tried to date the fragments on the north wall in more detail based on the noble costumes of the donors, and I suggested correcting the dating from the last quarter of the 14th to the end of the first quarter of the 15th century. In the same context, I also explored a newly discovered fragment on the south wall, where the female noble costume of the donor is well discernible. The costume fits perfectly into the fashion around 1420, and as references I suggest the portal of the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth in Košice and the fresco of the Last Judgment in Bruck an der Mur, both works created around 1415 – 1420. A characteristic fashion detail that determined this dating is the female headpiece ‘kruseler’, which is repeated in the same type and with the same fashionable details in all three reference works. The newly discovered fragment of the fresco in this way determines the dating, i.e. the correction of the earlier dating of this cycle of frescoes, and in the search for donors from the court circle of Louis of Anjou, one should turn to Sigismund of Luxembourg and his circle.
