Sažetak
Amongst numerous works of art in Dalmatia it is quite rare to find a copy of an old renaissance or baroque painting, let alone of a statue. However in some Dalmatian churches and seafarers’ homes there are a few replicas of a well-known statue done in the fifteenth-century Gothic style. It is the Virgin with the Christ Child, respected highly in Trapani, Sicily. Those replicas of small size were made of alabaster by local masters of Trapani and sold mostly to seafarers who were arriving to this harbor during the 17th and 18th century on their sailing-vessels. Among them there were a considerable number of mariners from Dubrovnik. The Republic of Dubrovnik had its Consulate in Trapani, too.
The author of the article has found several small replicas of the Virgin from Trapani and has published them in the Bulletin of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb. This time he published some more copies that he has found in Dubrovnik, at Lopud as well as in Split and Zadar. All of them he dates in the 17th and 18th century mostly for the style of their relief-decorated base, sometimes with city-arms of Trapani on it. One of them had the name of this Sicilian port on it i.e. the Latin inscription pointing out that the statue of Madonna sands for the glory of the residents of Trapani. Those statues show that, besides good trade connections between Sicily at one side and Dubrovnik together with the other Dalmatian harbors at the other side, there were some artistic relations, too. These art associations con firm the stone works, particularly the crowns of water-wells, made for the houses in Messina at Sicily by the stone-masons from Dubrovnik through the 15th century. The author of this work wrote on that matter before.
