Two Supplements to the Maritime History of the Dubrovnik Republic

1. NAUTICAL-COMMERCIAL RELATIONS BETWEEN LANCIANA (ABRUZZO)
AND DUBROVNIK
In this work the author brings a new light to the most important economic branch of the Republic: assisting, through her men's and material potentials, in maritime and commercial links with Lanciana. Namely, at the period of favorable occasions for sea transport and high demands for shipping facilities most of the ships were busy on the most profitable commercial sea-routes on the Black Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. On the other side Dubrovnik maritime businessmen never neglected the very important route connecting the ports of Dubrovnik and those of Apulia, Abruzzo and Marche, which was an artery in the exchange of goods between the Apennines and the Dubrovnik Republic. The most engaged organization in these relations was well-organized ships’ and sea trade insurance, which offered full certainty and firm guaranty for successful sea and port operations either in the ports of Dubrovnik (in anywhere cargo for Abruzzo was shipped), on the sailing routes or in the disembark acti.
2. CADETS ON THE DUBROVNIK SAILING SHIPS.
The author states here that cadets as profession and service on deep-sea sailing ships appeared in the middle of the 18th century. Cadetship was most usual in the last eight years in the long life of the Dubrovnik Republic. Some of the cadets became ship--masters in a rather short time (after 2 to 3 years of service), others used to be ship’s junior clerks first, and then (after 4 to 7 years) they would become ship-masters, too.
