Sažetak

This paper is an attempt to restore, complete and evaluate the corpus of published and unpublished fables written by the Ragusan author Đuro Ferić (1739–1820). The conducted research included both his Latin and Croatian, printed and manuscript, original and translated fables. The collection of Latin fables Fabulae ab Illyricis adagiis desumptae, published in Dubrovnik in 1794, was Ferić’s first original printed work. By 1804, he had completed the second, never-published collection of 346 Latin fables and belonging Illyrian proverbs with a similar title and the same conception—Adagia Illyrica fabulis explicata. In addition to Ferić’s original fables, the corpus also includes his Croatian translation of the fables written by Phaedrus, which was published in 1813 in a bilingual edition. After the success of that edition, Ferić compiled the Croatian version of his own published and unpublished fables, which remained in manuscript. The search for Ferić’s fables begins with an attempt to establish the entire corpus according to the data from secondary literature, his private correspondence and literary will. Since Ferić’s fables and their translations were compiled in stages and were not conceived in an integral collection, all available manuscript sources had to be researched and revised. Based on the only printed edition from 1794 and seven manuscripts, including autographs and transcr ipts, a cor pus of 459 Latin and Croatian fables has been established, which corresponds to Ferić’s own description of his fable production, as presented in his literary will. In the context of the European literary tradition, Ferić’s fables follow the idea of the Age of Classicism in reviving a classical literary genre. On the other hand, their thematic and other stylistic characteristics represent all the features of the genre in the Age of Enlightenment. At the same time, Ferić’s fables are formally and thematically connected with Illyrian sayings and proverbs, which implies the author’s pre-Romantic interest in authentic oral tradition and folklore. Due to this peculiarity, Ferić’s fables have no predecessor nor antecessor in the European literature.
