IRON-AGE-DANUBE INTERREG DTP 2019 in Jalžabet: From research and preservation to the presentation and sustainable use of archaeological monuments, sites, and landscapes

Sažetak

During activities within “Monumentalized Early Iron Age Landscapes in the Danube river basin” (“Iron-Age-Danube” Interreg DTP), an international project involving the Institute of Archaeology from Zagreb along with partners from five Central European countries, the archaeological team of the Institute of Archaeology determined that one of the most famous prehistoric monuments in Croatia and one of the few giant unexplored prehistoric burial mounds in Central Europe had been robbed and severely damaged during the robbery. In winter 2017 already, Gomila in Jalžabet was the subject of emergency rescue excavations, which continued in 2018 and 2019. Such circumstances did not hinder the Institute of Archaeology in 2019 from implementing the obligations arising from the inclusion in the Iron-Age-Danube Interreg DTP project. The intense use of non-invasive analytical methods obtained much new information on the archaeological landscape in Jalžabet, but also on other archaeological sites and monuments throughout the micro-region. Within the project, an archaeological/tourist trail with bilingual inscriptions was set up along the Bistričak stream in 2019.
