SOME POINTS IN AESTHETICS AND CONCEPT OF LITURGICAL SPACE IN THE EAST

Sažetak
First, this work deals with the comprehension of art and aesthetic
categories in the East. In contrast to one aesthetic category of the
West, the category of beautiful, there are six of them in the East. The
basic aesthetic categories are beautiful and sublime. In the Middle
Ages the main aesthetic category in Byzantine art is sublime. The
author also deals with the relation between the Christian dogma and
art – theology and culture. Then, she presents the Byzantine concept
of space, i.e. of perspective. The architecture of Orthodox temples
connects mathematics with religion. Temples are expected to be both
symbols and forms of their content. They are symbolic-spatial bases
for liturgy and they are constructed for the purpose of liturgy. At the
end, the work gives attention to the influence of Byzantine art on the
faithful, as viewed by the Orthodox theologians. Works of architecture
and art in general are reminders of transcendental and an impetus to
man for change of heart.
