Sažetak

Hantaviruses (genus Hantavirus, family Bunyaviridae) represent a prime example of emerging viruses causing two distinct syndromes in humans: hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Since the isolation of Hantaan virus, a prototype of this genus, more than 20 new species have been described and the number of new ones is rapidly increasing. Hantaviruses are negative-stranded RNA viruses each carried by a specific rodent species. Along with its rodent hosts they are distributed throughout the world. Phylogenetic relationships of hantaviruses mirror those of their hosts showing a classical example of a virus-host co-evolution over 20 to 30 million years. Understanding this phenomena can improve our ability to predict where new hantaviruses may be found, whether they are pathogenic for humans, which are the best candidates for vaccine development or to improve existing methods in human diagnostics and rodent surveillance in different geographic areas.
