Sažetak

With his debut novel Mirko Kovač made a strong departure from the officially espoused literary discourse leading to the novel first being praised and then starkly denounced. Due to pessimism, alienation and insistence on a bleak image of the world, the author grossly “erred” against the aesthetics of socialist inspiration. Nevertheless, Kovač uses the grotesque as a powerful decomposing mechanism in shaping the art world. The article looks at the way the use of the grotesque code infuses the creation of spatial structures and the characters of father and son in the novel Gubilište (Gallows). Insofar as the novel realizes strong metatextual connections with the Biblical text, one should also consider the problem of space and characters through the analysis of sacral motives and the ways of their realization in the text.
