TESTING ANTI SLIP CHARACTERISTICS OF FLOOR COVERING MATERIALS

Sažetak


SUMMARY: Slips and falls on floors are frequent causes of accidents in the work place. The paper investigates basic principles by means of which the value of slip resistance or anti slip characteristics of the floor covering materials is determined, as well as the factors influencing the way people walk. It is possible to determine the value of slip resistance or anti slip characteristics of floor covering materials in both the dry and wet states for each surface intended for human traffic, both in the laboratory and/or by means of field measurements. Appropriate measuring instruments are used to determine the value of anti slip resistance. A pendulum is suggested as a measuring instrument. The values obtained in such a way are used to determine the possibility of slip of the measured floor covering. Safety criteria used to assess the possibility of slip on floor covering material are proposed. It is proposed that all floor covering materials be first tested in laboratory conditions. Attention needs to be focused on reducing slip danger, as a protection measure at work, in the phase of designing working rooms and spaces. Due to variable working conditions in the workplace and environment, which differ from laboratory conditions under which the anti slip characteristics of new floor covering materials are measured, it is necessary to test the floor covering after its laying in the real conditions of the workplace. It is also proposed that the tests of floor covering materials may be carried out in both the dry and wet states.
